George Clark – The General Revisited

Optimum are once again proud to be associated with a high-profile local project, this time The General in Bristol, for main contractor City and Country.

This video sees TV’s George Clarke returning to this stunning building, as the restoration now comes to an end.

When complete The General will be home to a collection of 205 one to four bedroom new and converted apartments and houses.

The character-filled homes, situated in the Grade II Listed buildings of the former Bristol General Hospital will include a converted chapel, triplex apartments with glazed upper floors and a penthouse apartment located in the unique octagonal tower, with views across the city to the Somerset countryside.

Optimum have been on-site for over 3-years, initially winning Phase 1, internal walls, ceilings & plastering, before securing further phases.

Optimum Quantity Surveyor Russel Mathews commented: “where we could we made good the existing plastered walls but in some instances, we lined the walls with a Furring System for maximum space and to achieve the high-quality finish that City & Country demands. The ceilings were mostly the MF Suspended Plasterboard System, with some beautiful feature lighting to enhance the look of these stunning apartments.
Daily challenges associated with a complicated city centre refurbishment arose, but with a dedicated work-force and management team we were able to overcome all these in a professional and timely manner , and to our clients complete satisfaction”.

Merry Christmas from Optimum

Well it’s that time of year again when our thoughts turn to both the forthcoming festivities and those less fortunate.

Last Friday was the official Christmas Jumper Day in the office, with staff donning their festive best, see the picture below of Derek who won a pair of Elf Ears for his efforts, whilst raising over £100 for Children in Need’s ‘Christmas Jumper Day’

We are also once again proud supporters of the Julian Trust, with staff, friends and family kindly donating much needed grocery items to help Bristol’s homeless community.

So that’s it for the year, we would like to wish our clients, suppliers, staff, friends and family for their continued support and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year.

The office closes tomorrow Friday 22nd December, reopening on Tuesday 2nd January 2018.

Helping Bristol’s Homeless

We are once again proud to be supporting the Julian Trust, helping Bristol’s homeless community.

Homelessness in Bristol has received much publicity over the years, with various official surveys suggesting that we have the largest number of homeless outside of London.

The Julian Trust acknowledges the work of more than forty other agencies in Bristol who are working with the homeless. Their aim is to provide basic first stage emergency accommodation, to get people off the streets.

This annual initiative, invites staff, friends and family to bring in a selection of grocery items, much needed during the cold winter and difficult Christmas period.

Crest B16 – Bath Riverside Progress Report

The next phase of the prestigious Bath Riverside Project is progressing nicely, with first fix Party Walls scheduled to complete in the next few weeks and Partitions and MF Ceilings also progressing well.

The B16 development consists of 53 luxury 1-2 bedroom apartments with all aspects of this building and specification as per B5, with a high performance and quality standard, set by the NHBC.

This project is a contender for the ‘Pride in the Job’ award, a seal of excellence within H&S standards, previously awarded to B5.

Site Health and Safety Compliance Award

Since the introduction of the Site Health and Safety Compliance Award earlier in the year, we have seen a steady improvement in standards on-site.

Optimum launched this internal company initiative to promote best practice and site safety in May. The monthly scheme works across both Drywall and Combined Services Companies.

The scheme has some strict criteria and is monitored by Health and Safety Director Tony Marshfield and Operations Manager Steve Ng.

Healthy competition is enjoyed between sites, using a league table to keep teams focused.

Optimum committed to health and safety management

Optimum has continued in research and development of various types of equipment to aid health and safety management inc manual handling equipment to assist in the reduction of repetitive handling.

Check out the drone footage below, used to capture the internals of the fantastic Crest Nicholson Riverside development in Bath.

The latest phase, B5, is one were particularly proud of and looks amazing, with high-end finishing across all internals.

Bath Riverside by Crest Nicholson, is a collection of apartments and penthouse apartments only a short flat walk from Bath City Centre. Set on the banks of the River Avon, these new homes in Bath are one of the very few residential developments that enjoys direct access to the riverside whilst being within walking distance of the town centre.

10-year – Lisa Clubb

Lisa began her career with Optimum in May 2006 as a consultant accountant, assisting in the busy accounts team.

She took up a permanent role in 2007, moving accountancy services in-house and taking over responsibilities from our external accountant, overseeing all financial transactions and compliance. During these early years Lisa implemented many changes that have been pivotal in our growth.

In 2010 Lisa embarked on a Master’s Degree to further benefit the company. Specialising in a research project, Construction Accounting methods past, present and future.

Lisa graduated in 2012 and went on to invest her newly acquired knowledge into ensuring Optimum was fully compliant and financially efficient.

Lisa was made Finance Director in 2013 and has been an invaluable addition to the board, assisting in the directional decision making of the company, including in the same year, the launch of Optimum Combined Services Ltd. Now 4 years on, Lisa manages the finances of OCS in the same methodical way she has done for Drywall over her ten-year tenure.

She has imparted her knowledge to many staff members over the years, most of whom are still working within the two companies and have progressed within their own right to become knowledgeable and valued personnel.

We hope Lisa continues as her role of FD long into the future, steering us successfully through the volatility of the construction industry and as our company grows.

Optimum Long Service Awards

10-year – Matt Charlton

Matt started work for Optimum as an apprentice plasterer in August 2007, following a successful period on work-experience.

He attended Hartcliffe College on day release and qualified through the NVQ route, achieving his Level 2 in both solid plastering and tape and jointing. Thereafter and teaming up with Carl Plant, they were able to gain valuable experience in external rendering, both coloured and insulated.

A keen footballer and sportsman unfortunately Matt received a massive knee injury in 2013 and following an operation was off work for 4-months. Spotting an opportunity, Matt was offered the chance to come in to our busy head office, assisting our procurement team whilst gaining valuable experience throughout all departments.

After a period successfully assisting a site manager, it was a natural progression for Matt to move into the management team.

As always, Matt grabbed this opportunity with both hands and over the last 4-years has proved worthy of our investment. Successfully completing several high-profile projects.

Well trusted and respected by clients and colleagues, Matt is currently managing the prestigious Crest Nicholson Riverside site in Bath & has proved an invaluable asset to the company.

We would like to congratulate Matt for over 10 years’ service, looking forward to the next 10-years and eagerly await the next step on his career path.

New Wins for Optimum Drywall Systems

Watkins Jones Group – Student Accommodation Development – Midland Road, Bath

Our first project for new client Watkins Jones Group.

A Student Accommodation development with ancillary uses, located just outside Bath City Centre. The development comprises of 108 studios – 94 Student studios and 14 residential studios.

The project is being run operationally by site-manager Adam Hewlett and commercially by QS Alex Lopez Grau, with a value of 580k, for SFS, Render and Internal works and spans a 21-week programme.

Skanska – ICCU – Walsall Manor Hospital

For existing client Skanska, this latest project at Walsall Manor Hospital to extend and refurbish the ICCU unit.

This 2-month project, has a value of 94k, for SFS and Render works only, with the internals currently at the tender stage and will be run operationally by site-manager Steven Ng Jnr and commercially by QS Alex Lopez Grau.

Optimum Drywall Systems has extensive experience of working in the specialist healthcare sector and look forward to once again working with main contractor Skanska.

BAM – UK Hydrographic Office – Taunton

Optimum are thrilled to be once again working for main contractor BAM Construction Bristol on the redevelopment of the UKHO’s new HQ.

UKHO, which provides global hydrographic and geospatial data to defence, mariners and maritime agencies across the world, will continue to operate from its current buildings until moving into the new office which is planned for 2019.

This 17-week on-site programme has a current project value of 144k for SFS and Weatherboard only and started late October.
